READY

Cinnamon, cloves, tart apples, and chocolate in one loaf pan. This cake walks the line between coffee cake and dessert, and honestly, it’s welcome at any meal.

Chunks of peeled apple keep the crumb moist and fruity, while mini chocolate chips melt into little pockets of richness throughout. The buttery streusel on top gets crumbly and golden in the oven, and a quick drizzle of melted chocolate ties the whole thing together.

It bakes low and slow in a loaf pan for just over an hour, filling your kitchen with the kind of warmth that makes people wander in asking “what smells so good?"

Pro Tips

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith. They hold their shape during the long bake and balance the sweetness of the cake.
  • Alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk in batches, starting and ending with the dry. This keeps the batter smooth.
  • Let the cake cool for a full 10 minutes in the pan before turning out. The streusel needs time to set or it’ll crumble off.
  • Let the chocolate glaze set completely before slicing for the cleanest presentation.

Directions

Heat oven to 350 Fahrenheit.

Grease 9×5×3-inch loaf pan.

In large mixer bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Add eggs and vanilla; beat well.

Stir together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, cloves and salt; add alternately with milk to butter mixture, beating until well blended.

Gently fold in apples and small chocolate chips.

Spoon batter into prepared pan.

Sprinkle streusel topping over top.

Bake 1 hour and 10 to 15 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.

Cool 10 minutes; remove from pan to wire rack.

Turn right side up.

Drizzle semi-sweet chocolate glaze over top, if desired.

Allow glaze to set before cutting cake.

Streusel topping:

In small bowl, stir together ⅓ cup all-purpose flour and 3 tablespoons sugar; cut in 2 tablespoons butter or margarine to form fine crumbs.

Semi-sweet chocolate glaze:

In small microwave-safe bowl, place 3 tablespoons semi-sweet chocolate and ½ teaspoon shortening.

Microwave at HIGH (100%) 30 to 45 seconds or until chips are melted when stirred.
