Why buy a bottle of Chartreuse when you can steep your own herbal liqueur on the kitchen counter? This DIY infusion builds layers of warm, aromatic flavor from cardamom, star anise, angelica root, cinnamon, clove, and mace, all steeped in vodka for a week.

After straining through cheesecloth, a pour of sugar syrup smooths the edges and pulls every flavor into harmony.

The result is a complex sipper with a warm, spiced bite. Pour it neat after dinner, mix it into cocktails, or gift a bottle to someone who appreciates the handmade touch.

Chef Tips

  • Use a decent mid-shelf vodka. Cheap vodka carries harsh flavors that compete with the botanicals.
  • Crush the cardamom seeds and anise well. More surface area means faster, deeper extraction.
  • Strain through cheesecloth at least twice for a crystal-clear pour.
  • This liqueur improves with age. If you can resist, let it rest another week after sweetening for even smoother results.
