25 minIf you’ve ever wondered what’s actually in commercial sandwich spread, this homemade version lays it all out. Mayonnaise as the base, finely chopped dill pickles, celery, scallions, pimentos, and parsley, seasoned with turmeric and Italian seasoning.
The turmeric gives it that familiar golden tint you see in jarred spreads, and it adds a subtle earthy warmth underneath the tangy mayo. The golden broth seasoning packet stirs in an extra layer of savory depth that plain mayo can’t deliver on its own.
Everything gets chopped fine so the relish spreads smoothly without chunky bits catching on the bread. A quick stir and it’s done. No cooking, no blending.
This won’t last as long as the commercial stuff since there are no preservatives, so plan to use it within a week.
Kitchen Tips
- Chop all the vegetables as finely and uniformly as possible. Coarse pieces make it hard to spread
- Use homemade mayonnaise if you can. The flavor difference is noticeable in something this simple
- Let it sit in the fridge for at least an hour before using so the flavors marry together
- Squeeze excess moisture from the chopped pickles before mixing or the spread will be runny
Variations
- Add a teaspoon of prepared horseradish for a sharper, more assertive spread
- Mix in a tablespoon of sweet pickle relish if you prefer a sweeter version
- Stir in a finely chopped hard-boiled egg to turn it into an egg salad-style spread

Directions

Won’t keep as long as commercial sandwich spread.
