To purchase pears, look for fruits that are firm, but not too hard. The skin should be smooth and free of bruises or mold. Don’t pick pears that have holes or dark soft spots. Pears actually do not ripen on the tree. The pears that you see in the grocery stores are mature but not ripe. If left at room temperature, the pear will slowly turn into a sweet and ripe fruit. Storing pears in a paper bag increases the ripening time. Expedite this further by adding apples or bananas. If you wish to slow ripening, put ripe pears in the refrigerator. Do not refrigerate unripened pears.
