Baking Pan and Dish Volume Guide

pots-pans-img-5677-1081.jpg

Refer to this chart when you don't have the exact baking dish or pan size needed called for in a recipe or when you want to adjust the shape of the baked good.

Contents

This handy chart provides some of the most commonly used baking dishes and pans and their volumes. Refer to this chart when you don't have the exact baking dish or pan size called for in a recipe or want to adjust the shape of the baked good.

Always try to choose a baking dish or pan with the same volume that's called for in your recipe. The depth of the baking vessel can vary, but a dramatic difference can cause issues. Too shallow a depth, and the mixture may overflow. If the baking pan is too deep, pastries may not brown properly, or the sides of a cake may end up higher than the center.

This is really helpful! If the size you're looking for isn't here, you can always measure yourself by simply testing how many cups of water it takes to fill your pan/ dish.

I needed a large classic soufflé dish and was unsure of the dimensions. By finding this website, it turns out I had the perfect substitute casserole dish. Thanks so much!

Your chart doesn’t show you the volume of a 11”x1” fluted tart pan, which is the only tart pan I could find. The recipe calls for a 9”x1” fluted tart pan.

Hi, I found a couple of typos so I thought I'd share them. I'll put corrections in bold. I tried to cut and paste the paragraph on google doc, then put it here all corrected. That didn't work. Nor can I make anything bold here. So, I just put corrections in parentheses.
Always try to choose a baking dish or pan that has the same volume that's called for in the recipe you are making. The depth of the baking vessel can vary, but a dramatic difference can cause issues. Too shallow a depth and the mixture may overflow. If the baking pan is too deep,(add comma after deep) pastries may not brown properly. (period added) (New sentence follows) Additionally, the sides of a cake may end up higher than the center.

see how much I care about you?! Just want to make sure people get the tips

Kathi

I notice that you put the volume of an 8x3 springform pan as 10 cups and an 8x2 as 6 cups. A 1” difference in height is a 4 cup difference? I find that hard to believe.

Fat Daddio 13”x4”x1” removable bottom tart pan. For the love of god does ANYONE have a conversion? Not even the 4 page Fat Daddio’s Batter Capacity Chart includes this pan. It’s a brand new bake for me and I’m creating the recipe inspired by others so I can’t just say oh, 4 cups! I’ve also got three different layers baking at separate times. It can NOT be this hard.

Want to make a slab cake in a large roast pan size 36.5x26.5x4.5cm how much cake mix is needed thankyou

Excellent article! The photos are very helpful. I read 6 different google blurbs about how big a 9" pan is supposed to be. Not one explanation matched the other but your 4 cups matched one explanation. Your thoroughness on the subject of pie/cake plates/pans surpasses all. Thank you.

How long should I put brownies in the oven for with a 7x5x1.5 in Pyrex glass pan for

sean GTA, Ontario, Canada

To make a slab cake in a large roast pan measuring 36.5x26.5x4.5cm, you'll need approximately 5 cups of cake mix. Make sure to adjust the baking time accordingly, as it may vary from the original recipe. Happy baking!

If an 8x2 springform is equal to 6 cups, and 8x1 equals 3 cups. And 8x3 springform pan would equal 9 cups all things being equal. No tapered sides no radiuses in the corners, just a straight wall springform pan. So you may be correct it's not four cups more only three.
