Ham Head

Ham Head is a fun Halloween food art project for kids. A round ham slice becomes a spooky face with hard-boiled egg eyes, olive pupils, pickle mouth with olive teeth, carrot ears, and string cheese hair.

No cooking required, just a round slice of ham and some fridge staples arranged into a creepy, edible face. This is a Halloween snack project that kids love to build (and eat) themselves.

Hard-boiled egg halves become bloodshot eyes with thin pimento strips across the whites and black olive rounds for pupils. Dill pickle slices form a grinning mouth with olives lined up inside as teeth. Baby carrots stick out as ears, and pulled string cheese makes wild, messy hair.

The trick is cutting a flat spot on the back of each egg half so they sit level on the ham without rolling away. Everything else is just placement and a little imagination.

Kitchen Tips

  • Use a thick-cut round ham slice so the face has a solid base. Thin deli ham wrinkles and won’t hold the toppings in place.
  • Prep all the pieces before assembly. Kids lose patience if they’re waiting for you to cut olives while the face is half done.
  • Toothpicks can anchor stubborn pieces that keep sliding, but remove them before anyone takes a bite.

Variations

  • Turkey face: Use a round slice of turkey breast instead of ham for a lighter version.
  • Veggie monster: Skip the ham entirely and build the face on a large round cracker or rice cake for a vegetarian party snack.
