A hilariously gross Halloween cake decorated to look like a head with frosting ‘hair,' cherry eyes, and a fruit roll-up tongue. Kids go absolutely wild for this one. Easy box cake base.

If you’ve got kids and a Halloween party on the calendar, this gloriously disgusting cake is about to become your secret weapon.

It starts simple: a basic box cake mix baked in two round pans and stacked with chocolate frosting.

The fun begins when you squeeze frosting from a ziplock bag to create stringy “hair” flowing from an imaginary part down the sides of the cake.

Cherry “eyes” and a “nose” get glued on with frosting dabs, and a fruit roll-up tongue completes the look.

The “dandruff"? That’s where coconut flakes come in, sprinkled generously through the frosting hair. Gross? Absolutely. Will the kids scream with delight? Every single time.

Kitchen Tips

  • Cut a tiny corner off the ziplock bag. You want thin streams of frosting for realistic-looking hair. You can always cut bigger, but you can’t cut smaller.
  • Chill the stacked cake for 20 minutes before decorating. Cold cake is easier to frost without tearing.
  • Get the kids involved in the decorating. This is meant to be messy and fun, not a pastry school project.

Directions

Grease the inside of both cake pans with vegetable shortening, then lightly dust with flour.

Prepare and bake cake according to package directions.

After removing cake from pans, allow to cool on wire rack for at least ½ hour.

Place one layer upside down on cake plate.

Spread a thin layer of frosting on top only, then carefully place the second layer on top of the first layer.

Fill ziploc bag with the rest of the frosting and twist the top tightly shut.

Using scissors, cut off a TINY bottom corner of the bag.

To decorate: Think of the top of the cake as the top of a human head and imagine a part running down it’s middle.

Now, using the plastic bag of icing as a pastry bag, squeeze a stream of frosting hair falling from the imaginary part down the side of the cup Using a dab of frosting, glue two cherries on the cakes face for eyes and one for a nose.

Then, using clean scissors, carefully cut a piece of fruit roll into the shape of a tongue.
