Ingredients

1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 cup sugar
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon star anise crushed
2 large eggs
1 each egg yolk
3 cups flour, all-purpose
1/2 cup candied cherries red, chopped
1/2 cup mixed candied fruit
1 tablespoon orange zest finely shredded
1 each egg whites
1 tablespoon sugar

Directions

Beat butter or margarine in a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add the 1 cup sugar, baking powder, and aniseed. Beat till well combined. Beat in whole eggs and egg yolk.

Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in remaining flour, candied fruits, and orange peel with a spoon. Divide dough in half.

Shape each half into an 11x2x1 inch loaf. Place on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Stir together egg white and 1 tsp. water. Brush over dough. Sprinkle with the 1 tbsp. sugar.

Bake in a 375F oven for 20 to 25 minutes or till light brown. Cool on sheet for 1 hour. Cut each loaf diagonally into 1/2-inch slices.

Place slices, cut side up on an ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake in a 325F oven for 10 minutes. Turn slices over; bake 10 to 13 minutes more or till crisp. Cool on wire racks.

Makes 35. Serve with wine or coffee for dunking.

Reviews

This recipe has an error in the ingredients-I'm certain that the amount of baking powder is incorrect and therefore should be 2 1/2 tsp. NOT CUPS as stated. With that in mind, I can't wait to make these as they sound so good!

Easy Onion & Herb Focaccia

Wow this was good, and I'm some stuffed! This dish was easy to make and bake and fill your face with. I added an italian blend of cheese that included provolone, mozzarella, parmesan and asiago. Served it up with Alpine Baked Pasta and it was a full meal. The sage made the dishes aromatic and extraordinary!
