| 1/2 | cup | vegetable shortening | |
| 1 | cup | brown sugar | |
| 1 | each | egg | |
| 3/4 | cup | applesauce | |
| 2 | cups | flour, all-purpose | |
| 1 | teaspoon | baking powder | |
| 1/2 | teaspoon | salt | |
| 1/4 | teaspoon | baking soda | |
| 1 | teaspoon | cinnamon | |
| 1 | teaspoon | nutmeg | |
| 1/2 | cup | raisins, seedless | |
| 1/2 | cup | walnuts | chopped |
| 9 | each | walnut halves | walnut halves |
1. Preheat oven to 350 F.
2. In large bowl, cream shortening and sugar until creamy.
3. Stir in egg, than applesauce. Blend in reminding ingridients except walnut halves.
4. Spread mixture into an 8 inch square non stic baking dish.
5. Place walnut halves on top of dough.
6. Bake for 40 minutes, or until firm to the touch.
7 Cool in pan;cut into nine squares

We tried the cuban navy bean soup, with family and friends, and everyone thought that it was very good. This recipe will be one of our favorite bean recipes. The navy beans, butternut squash and cabbage made a good combination.
