How to cook Bisquick dumplings?

To cook Bisquick dumplings, mix 2 cups of Bisquick mix and ⅔ cup of milk until a soft dough forms.

Then, drop spoonfuls of the dough onto your stew or chicken and dumplings.

Cook the dumplings uncovered over low heat for 10 minutes. After that, cover the pot and cook for another 10 minutes.

This method ensures that your dumplings turn out buttery and pillowy, making them a delightful addition to your meal.

Drop on TOP of your stew ( like chicken and veggies, etc), then follow cook time directions. Easy peasy!

How to make Bisquick dumplings better?

To make your Bisquick dumplings even better, consider these tips and tricks:

  1. Add herbs and spices: Enhance the flavor of your dumplings by incorporating herbs like parsley, thyme, and rosemary or spices like garlic, paprika, and cayenne pepper. You can also add some grated parmesan cheese or shredded cheddar cheese for an extra layer of taste.
  2. Let the dough rest: Allow it to rest for 5-10 minutes after mixing it. This will give the baking powder time to activate and help the dumplings rise better. Why do my Bisquick dumplings dissolve?

There could be a few reasons why your Bisquick dumplings are dissolving.

One possibility is that they are overcooked and have become too fragile.

Another possibility is that the liquid in which they are being cooked is too acidic, causing the dumplings to break down.

Why are my Bisquick dumplings hard?

you want fast bisquick dumplins? lol use the biscut packages you buy individually, they are 2 cups pre measured..you can get them in various flavors, and all you do is change the 2/3 cup of milk to water...been using them a year everyone loves them

I did not and have not had the same experience that I’ve had for the last 30 years. The recipe or the product is nit the same. If you follow the recipe in the box with 4 packets (maybe be more in it). It comes out very fence and everyone is completely disappointed. It’s so awful to offer a great meal and one of the best parts of it come out very wrong. I’ve wasted time, money and disappointed a lot of family and friends. It’s very very frustrating! Why would the company do this. I’ve heard other people say this same thing.

If your company really care about profit, I would think they would address this……, but no one ever does. I don’t understand and am looking for anew product if anyone can suggest one to me, something much better than what Bisquick keeps offering. Thank you and I look forward to your suggestions!

The question about dropping it on liquid- I wondered that too- but I THINK they’re using “stew” and “liquid” interchangeably? And they are pointing out to drop by spoonfuls and not just plop the whole bowl full onto the top???

I use the box and use 3/4 cup buttermilk - let dough rest 5 min and use a cookie scooper to make the perfect same size dumpling. So easy!

I just made a small batch and I don’t even bother to measure. I just dump Bisquick in bowl, add milk from carton slowly (to control the amount used) then mix with a fork until it forms a sticky blob that holds together. Sometimes I need to add more milk to get right consistency . Spoon individual dollops over ingredients in pot. Great results yet again!

I am 61 years old now. In my 20's when I was just learning to cook I used biscuit dough. Then as I got older my aunt taught me to make them homemade. The difference difference huge. Now I use biscuit and they taste the same as homemade. Never will I ever make them with biscuit dough again.

I think what it means by "do not drop into liquid" is so that it doesn't splash up and burn you" At least that's my take on it.

I mix them like this recipe, add some garlic and herbs to the mix like some others said. But to get them to be like moms, I do roll out the dough very thin and cut them into squares with a pizza cutter. I drop in boiling chicken and veggies stock. The sink, then rise, and then simmer for a while. I always have to double the recipe, my family loves them. The next day they are fabulous.

Paula United States be sure your bisquick is not outdated. If your dumplings are hard the baking powder isn't working anymore to rise them. Only use fresh.

Paula United States. I have found that if I cook my dumplings on too high of temp they don’t fluff up and tend to be doughy. I bring my broth to a boil and add dough then turn the heat way down to a simmer. Been making these dumplings for almost 50 years.

I use the cheap biscuits most time for making Chicken&Dumplings. I tried Grand biscuits, there noo difference in taste, except price wise. Cut biscuits into 1/4 and drop on soups/stews. #meow S.

I have used this recipe for 20+ years in stew and chicken and dumplings. This is how I vary it.
quarter 2 Tbls butter
1/4-1/2 sea salt
1 tsp parsley
mix dumpling recipe and add the above items and let set for about 10 minutes.

For the gluten free version of bisquick, you need more milk - maybe a cup to 1.25 cups. It's great by the way. So happy it exists.

Lol!! That's so cute! I've always loved these and they are the only genetically modified thing I will allow in my house. As long as I don't get some disease I will continue to use it once in awhile. It's truly not good for our organs and immune system. But I like how fluffy the dumplings are. Adding organic garlic helps me to think I've made them a little healthier, LOL!

If you don’t have celery stalks on hand, use celery seed instead. Celery doesn’t last that long for me, so instead of buying a stalks, I keep seed on hand at all times. Keeps me from throwing wilted stalks away.

My veggies and potatoes and add can of cream of chicken...then add diced chicken and garlic..mix my Bisquick....let sit for ten minutes..... place my dumplings in bottom of baking dish....cool my veggies and then pour over dumplings.....bake in oven for about 20 minutes uncovered....then reduce oven temp to 325...for 10 minutes covered lightly with foil... making it today....so delicious......just make sure your mix is fresh...I am 79 and have been doing this for over 55 years...just because it's no longer on the box...write it down add it to your favorite receipies..

Agree,and no, the recipe is not the same. I made it the biscuit way and pretty much ruined my stew,once. 2/3cup of milk verses 1 cup makes a lot of difference,they are not fluffy,pretty much melt in your stew. I want mine fluffy.

You drop them in lightly to simmering soup with tablespoon they will float to top then it's 10 min uncovered and 10 min covered.when they swell up it generally covers whole top of like a 8 quart kettle (ya know the size that like comes in sets with handles ) hope this helps :0)

I grew up with bisquick but my husband likes those flat premade dumplings so we compromised... I use bisquick and just roll it out and cut it in strips. Tadaa. Still fluffy and it makes a thicker broth those premade chewy strips never could. Now its my favorite. Belinda, Florida

I roll out the dough for my dumplins,. . .they are chewy & more like a fluffy noodle. I have chicken broth, pieces of chicken, carrots, celery & green peas. Sometimes, I quarter potatoes & cook them in the broth. So good too. I drop the dumpling into the broth to cook.

Dumplings like biscuits, suffer from over-mixing. If they come out chewy or dense, gluten has been over developed. This is great for bread, but not for light and fluffy. Suggestion: Mix by hand, gently (spoon), rest the dough at room temp. 'till you see some rise and never use a wisk.

The recipe is on the side of the box under BISCUITS & DUMPLINGS. The dumpling recipe is at the bottom of that section. It's always been there but easy to overlook.

I have not made this dumpling recipe for about 10-15 years. I am preparing & noticed the recipe was gone. So I immediately searched on my PC, and thankfully it was found. After so many years I had forgotten the actual recipe although it's a very simple one. I can't wait to taste those babies after so long. I just got a new box, and the recipe for dumplings is in the side of the box, and the drop biscuits recipe is on the side. No problem at all. Only reason here is because when I cut those two recipes off of the box, I cut off the amount of milk. Wanted to make sure I remembered it correctly, which thank goodness, I did. Love Bisquick!!!QX

Just find the recipe either from a previous box or the internet & tape it to the bottom of the box. Or, you could even just write out the recipe & place it under the box. Just be sure to put the box back in the same place.

I have been making dumplings with Bisquick for over 20 years. This year I made them, and just like your post, they sank in the broth, never came back up to the top and were doughy. Yukkk. These past 2 times there was more broth in the pot, but I have done that before. In the past they have always floated and I would drizzle some broth over them as they cooked - floating on top of the broth. Why did they sink and come out heavy and doughy???

I have made dumplings from scratch when I was out of Bisquick but they weren't as good. My mother used Bisquick and I do too. You can't beat it for shortcake, pancakes, etc. I still use the Bisquick cookbook I bought when I got married in 1966. My kids brag about my homemade strawberry shortcake and pineapple upside down cake! I'm 75 now and still love to cook and Bisquick gives me homemade results the easy way!

I have used Bisquick for over 40 years and many different recipes to include dumplings. The dumpling recipe was always on the side or on the back of the box. Now when I buy Bisquick sometimes the dumpling recipe is on the back or side however most of the time it is not. And the dumpling recipe is slightly different from the biscuit recipe; the biscuit recipe calls for 1/4 cup more milk. I too wish the dumpling recipe was on every Bisquick box instead of certain ones; so I am as the rest of you leaving a message in hopes Betty Crocker listens to all of us and put the dumpling recipe where it belongs! Thank you for such as wonderful product as Bisquick...it surely is wonderful tool to have!

Dumpling recipe not on my box.that i brought at Walmart today. Glad to find this website. It is just the Hubby and I now, so i like to buy the rotisserie chicken you can get at Sam's club for $5. I try to make as many meals out of it as i can, usually 2-3 meals. In the summer i make chicken salad or curried chicken salad, or chicken nachos or quesadillas, and in the winter soups. I do not cover my dumplings for the last 10 minutes as recipe states. I tried this and my dumplings literally dissolved. So now I cook them uncovered and they are so nice and fluffy. I cook the dumplings and then gently add the cooked shredded chicken a little bit at a time, gently pulling dumplings apart to make a little peep hole to fold the chicken into the bottom of pan. Works great and we love them!!

Please put the dumpling recipe back on the box! I have been dropping the spoonfuls of dough on top of my chicken soup for years. Cook 10 minutes uncovered and then 10 minutes covered. I drop by spoonfuls right in the soup liquid. It does make for better thicker broth. It's my family's favorite soup.

Southern dumplings are not anything like traditional Bisquick dumplings. Rolled dumplings are more like noodles and are appropriately called "Slick Dumplings". Please don't mix the two recipes. They are 100% differently tasting foods.

Now at 77, I have never had chicken and dumplings that are cooked uncovered. For as long as I can remember, the chicken broth is brought to a boil, the dumplings added, covered and cooked for approx. 10 min. Light and fluffy.

I am 84 years old. That is how my mom taught me. Have broth at a medium boil, drop dough by tablespoonful, doing so quickly. cover and leave cover on!! for 13 minutes. No peeking! If the center seems heavy, it is probably because the balls were too big, or not enough space in pan. I always cooked one batch of dumpling, and then added precooked noodles to the broth, after removing dumplings. Cooking the dumplings always made the broth thicken nicely.

Here's a very simple recipe for homemade chick dumplings, a no fail...
Pot, half gallon water in it brought to boil. Add in Wylers chicken bullion granules, about 4 tablesoons. Drop in diced half onion, thinly sliced 2 carrots, cover and simmer on low 20 minutes. Take all meat off an already cooked or rotisserie chicken. Put aside. Freeze the chicken skeleton. Now, your dumplings you can get frozen by Kettle or Aunt Marys, eithet is fine. Grabv2 packs, and bring your broth to a rooling med high boil. Add dumplins 1 at a time. It will look like a lot of dumplings but thats fine. Now, here's the trick....add 1 can cream of celery soup and 1 can cream of chicken soup into the pot. Stir ever so often to prevent sticking. It will take aroynd 20 minutes on low for youe dumplins to be aldente and your broth nicely thicken. You're almost done now. While still on low add 1 half can evaporated milk or 1 whole smaller can, and cut up 1 stick of real butter, not unsalted. Stir. Add chicken in and dump a regular size can green peas in. Fold it all in. Tadte, and now you add salt if needed, 2 tsp sugar for sure, and a good shake of black pepper. Turn off burner. Set up for 5 min and serve. I also add fresh garlic to mine in the beginning. The whole process is only around 45 min and you can't beat it. You can feed 4 people on less than 15.00 tjis way.

I have been making these dumplings for about forty years and add celery, carrot, and dried onion flakes. I make a broth with the dried chicken broth cubes and water and now use a rotisserie chicken (pulled off bone) to make it simple. Along with most of the comments above, I will appreciate it if you put the recipe on the box, so I don't have to look it up each time. Thanks!

First of all, if you all have been making these dumplings for as long as you claim you have, you should have the recipe memorized by now. So, stop expecting the makers of Bisquick to do all the work for you and start doing your own homework. Simply, print out 2 copies of this recipe. Put one in the cookbook you go to the most. Tape the 2nd copy on the inside of the cabinet door where you store your beloved Bisquick. Voila! You now have the recipe at your finger tips any time you need it. Grow up and stop bellyaching and be glad that all they did was drop the recipe from the box. How would you all act if they stopped making Bisquick, period! Oh, if you are so worried that the recipe won't be around for your children or grandchildren, you can fix that, too. Make them a cookbook with your family favorite recipes in it and make sure you include this dumpling recipe for them. Problem solved! Now you can all get back to baking and cooking with Bisquick. Enjoy!

Baby those dumplings. I see people saying dumplings are heavy. The secret is to make sure your stew thick enough to support and to treat them gently.
Thicken your soup before adding dumplings. They should sit on top while cooking, not down in the soup.
Don't "drop" dumplings in. I've found that using two forks to push batter onto the stew allows it to gently lay on top. Following exact cooking times is also important. Do not take lid off during first 10 minutes.

I add about 1/2 cup more bisquick to the recipe and roll it out on a floured or sprinkle bisquick on counter to roll out. Use pizza cutter to cut in strips and pinch off dough from strips into boiling broth.

I had to cut the recipe off the box a long time ago, but now I know it by heart. The problem with all these recipes is they don't say that the stew or soup has to be boiling to get the dumplings not to sink in the broth. After you put all the dumplings in and they are floating, turn down the soup and cook 10 min on low and then cover and 10 min. The dumplings will always sink if you don't boil the soup. I agree the recipe needs to stay on the box on the side where it always was.

Agree the dumpling recipe needs to be back on the box! I don’t need colorful pictures of what I could make with Bisquick on the box. Just the recipe for the dumplings that is the best reason to buy it! Betty Crocker should learn to value customer input and satisfaction is key to keeping our loyalty.

We love Pork & Sauerkraut made on top of the stove. After the meat is done, I remove it from the pot. I then put the dumplings (using a large serving spoon) on top of the sauerkraut & cook boiling for 10 minutes. I then cover the pot & cook another 20 minutes on simmer. My family loves them. I can put about 11-12 spoonfulls on top of pot.
Lost recipie. Why not on box??? Glad I just got a phone that allows me to find this site. Loved all the other ideas.

Why do southerners have what they call dumplings that are hard like hockey pucks to me. Are they really dumplings? Of course they think ours are terrible. I am 76 and learned how to make these from my Mom, so have been eating/making them for about 70 years. Making them tonight.

I use chicken broth to cook the chicken - 2 breasts per recipe. Then, remove the chicken breasts to cool until after I make the dumplings (drop by spoonfuls into boiling broth). Finally, add the cut up chicken - I do not shred the chicken, but cut them into chunks of about 3/4 by 3/4 inches. If there are leftovers, place thick dumpling mixture into saucepan and add either chicken broth or milk to thin for easier warming and eating. I have not added carrots or celery because I wasn't raised on adding those veggies, but I bet they would be tastey!

I use chicken boullion in my stew with chicken thighs, onions, celery, carrots and criminal mushrooms. Cook for 2-3hrs on simmer, then raise to a boil to cook the dumplings. Paprika on to PD them is a nice touch.

There must be a couple hundred posts with people begging for the recipe to be put back on the box. Seriously, General Mills! Although it can be found on some of the boxes, depending on the size and distribution, why not promote your product to all customers?! The lack of convenience WILL ABSOLUTELY result in reduced sales. The cover could be be minimally redesigned to accommodate the recipe. There’s simply no excuse!

Yes please put the recipe back on the box. I add some Seasoned Salt such as Lawry’s to the broth with celery and after bringing to a boil simmer for a good long time. Also add a pinch to the dumpling batter for a unique taste.

Has anyone tried pork neck bones, sauerkraut and dumplings? That is my families favorite recipe for dumplings. I can remember having it very early in life and I will be 71 very soon. My Mom is 94 going on 95, she has made Bisquick dumplings all of my life. I just got through making a pot of them this evening myself, and I have to always remember what she has always said, do it backwards of what it says on the box, cover immediately after dropping then uncover and cook another 10 minutes.

I love these dumplings. They are so light and fluffy. One thing I have learned if you want them to stay light and fluffy rather than to get heavy and gummy is to skim all fat off the surface of the broth before adding the dumplings. If there is fat on top of the broth the dumplings will suck it up like a sponge and the dumplings are ruined. Good luck and enjoy.

My mom taught me over 30 years ago to increase the mix & milk by 150% (ie 3 cups Bisquik 1 1/3 cups milk. Makes a thicker more hearty batch of Dumplings...

Cooking tip: The mix is very sticky and will stick firmly to your spoon/scoop to avoid this happening, after you drop a Dumpling or two dip your spoon/scoop into the hot liquid for a cpl secs the next. Cpl of Dumplings will release quite easily

Well Bisquick, It took over an hour to read all these comments. And as of Nov. 7, 2020, there are over 200 requests for putting the dumpling recipe back on the box. I'd say there is an ad campaign worth having on your product. You've got people from 8 to 80 years old asking, or begging to put it back. So either your web admin or your marketing dept. is broken. Seems like a product easily replaced by milk, flour and water would be more interested in keeping peoples business....jussayin'

My mom who does not own a computer at 81 years of age and I were talking about dumplings and she said she always used the one on the box, but said it wasn't on the new box she bought and she couldn't remember it. So I had to look it up on-line for her. I agree with the other posts, put it back on the box, more recipes less graphics. We want to eat good food not look at the pictures on your box!

You know, you can call this chicken and dumplings but in our household it's chicken and clouds. Every now and then I'll do the flour and eggs and make a stick to the wall dumpling but most of the time my family wants chicken and clouds. I follow all the same recipes I put chicken onions carrots peas no celery I can't eat that stringy stuff and it smells funny so no celery but everything else and I season it with their with Rosemary and thyme , parsley
And a little salt and pepper but every time I make chicken and clouds I have to relook at the recipe cuz I don't remember if it's 10 minutes on with the lid at first or 10 minutes without the lid first either way and I have messed up several times they turn out delicious, and there's always enough for leftovers chicken and clouds is a hit in our household

Still loved all the recipes we used to get on the box. Especially the dumplings. We do forget measurements sometimes. We still own and operate a large company and enjoy bisquick in a variety of ways. Please help other seniors that aren't in our position. Put it back on the box. It's obviously the most popular recipe. Thank you!

I just made dumplings tonite. They always have turned out beautiful for me. Tonite i had some that were what I call dough balls. Hard and sticky. Three out of 17 you could not eat. It rained today would that be the problem? Also cold outside. Lilly White SLC Ut.

After I cook the dumplings according to the recipe 10 minutes on top of the stove 7 minutes with the lid on then I put them in the broiler for about 5 minutes you have to watch them close and let them get a little bit crispy on top I love them like that

If you want fluffy dumplings, after you mix it put a tea towel over the bowl and put it in a warm place for 20 minutes before spooning into the stew. The dough will rise slightly and make for incredibly fluffy dumplings. I also add some dried basil to the mix.

I'm actually making chicken and dumplings right now. I roast a whole chicken, pull all the meat off, then put what's left of the whole chicken, bones and skin in my instant pot with celery, carrots, onion, crushed garlic cloves and a potato along with parsley ,basil, rosemary, cracked black pepper, and sea salt. Cook 30 min. Release steam, strain broth and taste to season more. Back to the instant pit with the yummy broth. Add celery onion carrots potatoes. Cook on high 20 min. Now its in the stock pot on the stove. Added all the chicken meat too. The only thing I'm not making from scratch are the dumplings. Gave to be Bisquick!

You don't need a recipe for this. Just dump some Bisquick in the bowl and add milk til it is a good consistency to drop. I drop it on the liquid. Works fine.

I have been making the same recipe for many years! My grandmother used to make them from the bisquick recipe and family loved it.
Only thing I have done to change the recipe is. I fry the chicken breast (seasoned, of course) before cubing the breasts. It locks the flavor into the meat! So satisfying.

Drop dumplings are best when fresh and do not refrigerate well, in my experience. I’ve never tried to freeze them, but I don’t see that working out either.

I actually followed the 10 uncovered, 10 covered recipe exactly and wow! I don't have any experience with homemade dumplings but could they be any better? I doubt it. Usually I make ribs and cut off the left over meat in as big of chunks as possible. I put them in a kettle with enough water to almost cover and add a TBSP of really good beef bullion. Then I add the Bavarian style sauerkraut and simmer for about 15-20 minutes. Then I add a little thickening to make 'sauerkraut gravy'. I immediately add the premixed dumpling dough and cook as directed.

Without question, if you want outstanding chik and dumplings....put dumplings in stew until done....remove them to a pan....this keeps them from sinking....at that point add a bit of halh and halh to the broth.....serve dumplings in bowl, pour goodness over them....you're welcome

I’ve made these dumplings since I was a newlywed and coming up on 60 years. I have been altering and tweaking recipes for years, however, other than adding seasoning I don’t mess with my bisquick dumplings…. Therefore, I too was annoyed when the recipe was removed from the box… Checking recipes and proportions is not an inexperienced cook, in the case of these dumplings it’s making sure of positive outcomes every time!!

I only make dumplings using Bisquick and I use milk not water or chicken broth. I also drop them in my boiling broth and do not stir or mix once dropped. Turn heat down to simmer and cover

2 cans creme of chicken soup. 2 cans of water and one can of milk. bring to simmer. Drop dumplings. I use white pepper and salt for soup. Add leftover chicken. Great for a snowy day.

My great aunt Millie used to make chicken and dumplings when we would come over for Saturday dinner. It is one of my fondest memories eating dinner with my great grandmother, my great aunt, and my grandmother, as well as my mom and siblings. She always use Bisquick drop dumplings and so that’s how I learned to do it some 50 years ago. I’ve tried other dumplings that are made with flour and rolled out and cut into pieces. They just do not hold a candle to the Bisquick dumplings. I do miss the recipe being on the box, but after 50 years, I think I can remember how to make them without it.

Add some cheddar to your biscuit recipe.. put some melted butter with garlic powder and parsley on top and you have cheddar bay biscuits! Sooo good!

Not so much now but back in the day--I would take some of those canned whole tomatoes and put them in a pot, bring to boil, maybe add some basil, oregano could add other herbs or some onion and celery. make dumplings tossing in some parm. cheese and cook dumpling as usual but on top of tomatoes.
Like to add herbs especially when I can go snip them in the garden. Match to what you are cooking, rosemary, dill basis, oregano ....
You can also take canned peaches and add cinnamon, raisins, ginger, or whatever you like to them. make the dumpling mix and add a touch of sugar some of the same spices you added to the peaches if you want and cook as usual. You can add some butter to the peaches to make the dish richer. Nice last-minute snack or dessert.

I always use milk instead of water. I add the milk by look but I'm 78 and have been using bisquick for my chicken and dumplings for 57 years now. I don't make them as often now as when my kids were at home so I have too refresh for the 10 uncovered and 10 covered.

My Mama was a short order cook back in the day and an old cook made the Bisquick dumplings but he did NOT cook the dumpling directly on/in the stew/soup. He use a pie pan with holes in the bottom (used by commercial bakers to better brown the pie crust bottom and brown it). He placed it over the rim of the pot (don't float it) and place the dumplings on it so there is room between them. Cover and steam them over the soup/stew. Add them into the hot bowl of soup/stew before serving. This kept them from getting soggy in a restaurant setting.
