| 4 | cups | water | divided |
| 1 | each | great northern beans | 15 oz can, drained, rinsed |
| 1 | each | navy beans | 15 oz can, drained, rinsed |
| 1 | each | tomato sauce | 6 oz can, salt-free |
| 1 | each | tomatoes | diced, 14.5 oz can, low-salt, undrained |
| 2 | teaspoons | chili powder | or to taste |
| 1 | teaspoon | salt | optional |
| 1/2 | teaspoon | black pepper |
In a large saucepan, cook the onion and green pepper in 1/2 cup water until tender. Add beans, tomato paste and tomatoes. Stir in chili powder, salt if desired, pepper and remaining water; bring to a boil. Reduce heat cover and simmer for 20 minutes.

TOPPING FOR TOAST: 4-6 plum tomatoes chopped w/o insides/seeds/juices removed 1/2 tsb crushed garlic 2-4 fresh basil leaves chopped salt and pepper to taste ..gently stir in bowl and let sit for few minutes before using as topping for toast, as described above
