I believe this recipe is from the Better Homes and Gardens cookbook (the one with the red and white plaid cover) which I got in 1964. I used this recipe all through the years while raising my boys. This is the BEST brownie recipe ever! I only baked the brownies fo 27 minutes so they remained fudgy and incredibly delicious!

Thanks for sharing-I also made these for my kids growing up. So often I knew it by heart. Sadly- they're grown, the cookbook is who knows where and I'm happy to make them again.

Thank you for posting this recipe! This is the recipe I grew up with, my mother made these and I have never found a better recipe.

Yes same! We had to clean out their house in a hurry and these cookbooks were thrown out and I was so sorry when I found out. I was thrilled when I found this here.

I've been making these brownies for thirty years. Wouldn't dream of using another recipe. The page this recipe resides in my BHG red and white checkered cookbook is completely falling apart :)

I still have that well worn old plaid cookbook. I've made thousands of brownies from its recipe for my children and a lot of brownies became gifts to friends and family. Bunches of them went to college friends of my children! That cookbook was one of my wedding gifts 61 years ago. I had never cooked when I married so that book was a well used life saver.

I agree with previous comments that this is the easiest recipe that results in such delicious brownies. They're extra yummy slightly warmed and topped with a scoop of good vanilla ice cream. I have the same cookbook and it's been my go-to cookbook for well over 40 years. It has recipes I've made countless times. My book is falling apart, too!

I can’t believe it! I’ve been looking for this recipe for the longest time . I grew up in the 1950’s and my mother always made these . I had the recipe and then lost it not long after my mother died. I can’t wait to make them! THANK YOU!

I still have my mothers old red plaid cookbook and my granny made these brownies among so many other yummy things found in that book. My page 151 is missing and that's the page these brownies are on! Ty for posting! I'm baking them right now with my 4yr old son.

Soo happy I found this recipe! I had the original recipe in the cookbook I had from 1972. Made these so many times. A few years ago I gave the cookbook away before we moved. Finally, I’m back to the original after trying a few not-so-good recipes. MY FAMILY LOVES THESE!

Best brownies ever, my mom’s BHG from the 40s had this recipe and mine from 1972 had it too. I’ve never made another kind of brownie and the ingredients are always in my pantry for a last minute dessert!

I love this recipe! Sometimes, for a delicious twist, I substitute half the butter with peanut butter. Still bakes the same way and is really yummy!

I got the red and white cookbook in 1988 as a free gift when ordering my wedding invitations. This recipe has been made in my kitchen hundreds of times. My family loves these brownies. My son’s fiancé requested the recipe from me to continue the tradition. They are absolutely perfect. The trick is to not over mix the ingredients. Stir in the eggs just to combine. Top with chocolate butter cream frosting or vanilla ice cream!

I always make these brownies since 1973 BUT I substitute 2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder.
