Here is a meat-free, gluten-free, nutrition packed recipe, which you can add to your collection in readiness for National Vegetarian Week, which starts on the 15th May. Chickpeas are a high protein alternative to meat, they contain a whole host of other benefits like Selenium (not found in most fruits and vegetables) which helps to detoxify cancer causing compounds and decreases tumour growth rates. The herbs not only provide flavour but each play a part in improving our health from boosting the immune system to lowering blood pressure. Enjoy this healthy, tasty twist on an Italian classic.

A healthy flavoursome take on an Italian classic. Nutritional yeast has a nutty cheesy flavour making it a good alternative for a vegan diet, especially as it is a complete protein. Other benefits are all the B vitamins which are important for everyone’s health but more so for those on a vegan/vegetarian diet. This yeast is rich in Selenium which helps to repair cell damage therefore helping to reduce the risk of cancer. It has anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties, it improves digestion and as it is rich in folate pregnant women should include this in their diet. Just a few reasons to get familiar with this cosmopolitan dish.
A healthy vegan recipe, ideal for using up leftover Christmas day vegetables on Boxing Day. It’s a light dish perfect after the indulgences of Christmas day. Chickpea flour is naturally gluten free, chickpeas are a super source of protein, fibre and iron. The skin of vegetables and fruit are quite often a good source of nutrition in itself, the dark skin of the Zucchini/courgette is high in soluble fibre which slows digestion and stabilises sugar levels. The dark skin of the Eggplant/Aubergine is full of fibre, potassium, magnesium and antioxidants, Tomato skin is full of antioxidants too so before removing skins bear this information in mind.
This recipe is a great example of how a vegan or gluten-free diet doesn’t mean a restrictive one. Quinoa is ‘out of this world’ for goodness and may quite literally be ‘out of this world’ in the future! Nasa science investigations are experimenting to assess germination of Quinoa in microgravity, this proves how valuable a source of nutrition this seed is. Quinoa is a perfect provider of protein, this is determined by the fact that it contains all the essential amino acids. It is high in antioxidants that neutralise the free radicals that harm our body and it also has other numerous health benefits. What may soon be a celestial body should surely be pronounced correctly – Keen-wah!
Potato garbanzo gnocchi: instant mashed potatoes bound with chickpea and rice flour, deep fried into crispy fritter-style dumplings with garlic and cayenne. Naturally vegan, ready in 15 minutes.
You can keep fit and healthy running after real tennis balls, and also, with our nutritious edible version. Eggs contain an essential nutrient that is gaining a resurgence in the nutrition world, the nutrient is called Choline. Scientists in the mid 1800’s discovered that the molecule, Choline, in the yolk of eggs was exactly the same as a substance, ‘Neurine’, in our brain. Choline plays a key role in human cell health, nervous system activity and development, liver function, early growth and development (it is important for pregnant women to eat choline-rich foods). Spinach is rich in iron, this is important for red blood cells which help in the transportation of oxygen around the body – essential for all that running around. Take advantage, serve and then, love all!
You don’t want to supersede these Super seeds with anything else, they provide you with so much nutrition. Flaxseeds have been eaten for thousands of years, they are a plant-based source of omega-3 fatty acids which according to various studies help to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels, support heart health and help to prevent some cancers, not to mention protecting against cognitive decline. Flaxseeds contain high levels of mucilage gum, this is a gel-forming fibre that is beneficial for intestinal health, this gum keeps food in the stomach for longer allowing more absorption of the food’s nutrients. Fennel seeds contain dietary fibre so these also benefit intestinal health. Both seeds have antioxidants that fight the harming free radicals as well as many vitamins. Enjoy a super Chanukah.
Here’s another healthy and delicious recipe that we’ve developed for Fertility Road magazine. This simple frittata recipe is jam packed with nutrition and contains so many nutrients, which are important for conception. Eggs are such a great source of protein and iron (which are both really important nutrients for fertility). In addition they are also a fantastic source of vitamin D. Women who struggle with fertility often suffer from a deficiency in vitamin D. Broccoli is a good source of vitamin C, folate, calcium, iron, zinc and fibre. Vitamin C is particularly important for improving sperm quality in men and it also helps reduce the chance of miscarriage and chromosomal problems for women. Salmon is another great protein source and is rich in so many nutrients but particularly omega-3 fatty acids, which are proven to regulate blood flow to the reproductive organs.
There are tasty bars, and very healthy too, a lot of fibire and other nutrition.
This is a tasty burritos, nutritional and healthy too.
These easy to make, no-bake truffle treats are so delicious and full of nutrition. They make the perfect after dinner sweet treat, and the best part about this recipe is they keep in the freezer so you can just take them out as and when you need them. We love the combination of bananas and almonds, we discovered it recently while making my new ice-cream recipe, so this sweet snack has soon become a new favourite of ours. The ingredients in this recipe are all wholesome and all have anti-aging benefits, so if you’re looking to turn back the clock this is a fail safe as it’s full of magnesium (nuts, seeds and banana) probiotics (cacao) and polyphenols (cacao). If you find it difficult to blend the dates in your food processor a good tip is to soak them in hot water for a few minutes first which should soften them.
A ‘quick and easy to make’ light, tasty dish. You could add Tofu or other high protein based foods to make it a more substantial meal. If you’re interested in knowing more about the effects of the sprouting process, it actually improves many benefits that are already in the bean. The soaking/sprouting process increases the nutritional value of its’ protein, which is required for many bodily functions from building bone and muscle tissue to carrying oxygen around the body. The vitamin content also increases in some beans, the vitamin C increases as the seed germinates which provides antioxidants to combat free radicals. The fibre content also increases substantially – fibre binds to fats and toxins and quickly flushes them from our system. It has a positive overall effect to say the least. As always, please check the labels to make sure that the products you use are suitable for your specific diets or allergies.
A great breakfast, a lot of nutrition and great flavor too.
