| 1/2 | cup | vegetable shortening | |
| 1 1/2 | cups | cake flour | |
| 1 | cup | sugar | |
| 1/2 | teaspoon | vanilla extract | |
| 2 | large | eggs | separated |
| 2 | teaspoons | baking powder | |
| 2 | squares | chocolate (semi-sweet) | |
| 1/2 | cup | milk | |
| 1/4 | teaspoon | salt |
Cream shortening and sugar and add well-beaten egg yolks.
Melt chocolate using a double broiler, and add to creamed shortening and sugar mixture mixing thoroughly.
Sift flour together with baking powder and salt, and add alternately with milk to chocolate mixture.
Add vanilla and fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
Bake in hot waffle iron about 10 minutes.
Serve with hot syrup, whipped cream, or ice cream.
