This is comfort food at its simplest. Mix ground beef with onion soup mix (or mushroom or beef), breadcrumbs, ketchup, and an egg, then press it into a pie pan like a giant burger patty. Hot mashed potatoes spread over the top, and the whole thing bakes until the meat is cooked through.

Cheddar cheese goes on in the final 10 minutes, melting into a golden blanket over the potatoes. Scoop it out like pie and serve hot.

Pro Tips

  • Press firmly: Pack the meat mixture firmly into the pie pan so it holds together when serving
  • Hot mashed potatoes: Use freshly made, hot mashed potatoes so they spread easily over the meat
  • Add cheese at the end: Wait until the last 10 minutes to add cheese so it melts without burning
