60 minApple pie with cheese on top might sound like a curveball, but in parts of New England and the Midwest, it’s a time-honored tradition. As the saying goes: “Apple pie without the cheese is like a kiss without the squeeze."
This version makes it easy with a press-in crust of flour, oats, and oil. No rolling, no crimping.
Sliced apples get tossed with dry pudding mix (coconut cream or vanilla), which thickens into a silky coating as the pie bakes.
Shredded American cheese melts over the apples, and a crumbly oat topping goes on last for that golden, crunchy finish.
Kitchen Tips
- Don’t press the crust onto the rim. Keep it just along the bottom and sides of the pan for a cleaner edge.
- The cheese layer is subtle. It melts into the apples and adds a salty richness without tasting like a grilled cheese. Trust the process.
- Serve warm. This pie is at its best straight from the oven when the cheese is still melty and the crumble is crisp.
