Ingredients

1 cup dates unsweetened, chopped
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 2/3 cups water boiling
1/2 cup margarine
1/2 cup sugar
2 large eggs
1 3/4 cups flour, all-purpose
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons mini chocolate chips semi-sweet
3 tablespooons walnuts finely chopped

Directions

Combine dates and 1 1/2 teaspoons soda in small pan.

Pour boiling water over dates; stir to blend.

Let stand 30 minutes. Cream margarine and sugar. Add eggs and beat well.

Combine flour, soda, baking powder, and salt.

Alternately add dry ingredients and date mixture to creamed mixture beginning and ending with dry ingredients.

Batter will be thin. Pour into oiled and floured 9 x 13-in ch baking pan.

Sprinkle chocolate chips and walnuts over batter. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes or until cake tests done. Cool.
