70 minHot applesauce does something magical when it hits the batter, creating an ultra-moist crumb that stays tender for days.
Dates add sticky-sweet pockets throughout while walnuts provide textural contrast.
Four different spices create layers of warmth that make this taste like autumn in every bite.
Pro Tips
- Heat the applesauce until steaming for best texture results
- Chop dates into small pieces so they distribute evenly
- Don’t overbake; a few moist crumbs on the tester are perfect
- This cake tastes even better the next day after flavors meld
Ingredients
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350℉ (180℃). Grease well and flour a 9X9X2” pan.
Into large bowl, sift flour with soda, spices and salt. Add eggs, brown sugar, butter, and 1 cup hot applesauce; at low speed, beat just until the ingredients are combined.
At medium speed, beat 2 minutes longer, occasionally scraping the side of the bowl and guiding mixture into the beater with a rubber scraper.
Add remaining applesauce, dates, and walnuts; beat 1 minute.
Pour batter into pan. Bake 50 minutes or until straw comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes in pan.
