Chewy oatmeal raisin cookies with warm cinnamon and nutmeg spice. Classic rounds that require overnight chilling for the best texture and flavor development.

40 minThese old-fashioned rounds get their tender-chewy texture from rolled oats and a careful overnight rest in the refrigerator.
Cinnamon and nutmeg warm the dough while plump raisins add pockets of natural sweetness.
Flattening the chilled dough balls with a sugar-dipped glass creates those signature crackled tops and ensures even baking.
Baking Tips
- Chill the dough 4-5 hours or overnight so it’s easier to handle and develops deeper flavor
- Dip the glass bottom in sugar before each press to prevent sticking
- Use a greased glass for flattening to get consistent thickness across all cookies
- If using self-rising flour, skip the baking soda and salt entirely
Ingredients
Directions
Mix sugar, shortening, eggs, and vanilla thoroughly. Blend remaining ingredients into shortening mixture. Refrigerate dough 4 to 5 hours or overnight.
Heat oven to 375℉ (190℃). Roll dough into 1 inch balls and place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Flatten with greased bottom of glass dipped in sugar. Bake 10 minutes. Makes about 4½ dozen cookies.
NOTE: If using self rising flour, omit soda and salt.
