Cinnamon, nutmeg, and dried orange zest fill the kitchen with the kind of warm, bakery-shop smell that makes everyone wander in asking “what’s in the oven?"
Raisins dot every slice, while maple syrup and applesauce keep the crumb tender and slightly sweet without being heavy.
It’s brilliant for toast with butter, tea-time snacking, or even sliced thick for French toast the next morning.
Kitchen Tips
- Use the raisin setting on your bread machine if it has one, adding raisins at the beep so they stay whole instead of getting pulverized
- Applesauce keeps the bread moist with less fat than butter, but butter works if you prefer a richer loaf
- Dried orange zest gives a more concentrated citrus punch than fresh, but you can substitute 2 teaspoons of fresh zest if needed
Variations
- Cranberry walnut: Swap raisins for dried cranberries and add ⅓ cup chopped walnuts
- Apple spice: Replace raisins with ½ cup diced dried apples and add a pinch of ground cloves
