25 minThis spooky-cute twist on the classic Waldorf salad turns snack time into a full-on Halloween event.
All the good stuff is here: crisp diced apples, crunchy walnuts, plump golden raisins, and celery tossed in a creamy mayo dressing.
But the real magic happens on the plate, where you sculpt each serving into a werewolf face using endive ears, alfalfa sprout fur, pointy carrot fangs, and halved radish eyeballs.
It’s the kind of recipe that gets kids actually excited about eating salad, and it comes together in about 25 minutes with zero cooking required.
Kitchen Tips
- Toss the diced apples with lemon juice right away to keep them from browning. Nobody wants a grey werewolf.
- Let the kids handle the decorating. That’s the whole point, and they’ll be far more likely to eat what they helped build.
- Sturdy iceberg lettuce leaves make the best “plate” for shaping the face. Romaine works too but tears more easily.
Ingredients
Directions
Peel, core and dice the apples; toss in a large bowl with the lemon juice.
Add the raisins, nuts and celery to the apples and toss together.
In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise, milk and sugar until well blended.
Add the dressing to the other ingredients and toss.
Place 2 or 3 letuce leaves on individual salad plates and spoon the salad over the lettuce in a head shape.
To create the werewolf in your Waldorf, decorate each salad with pointy endive ears, alfalfa sprout hair and beard, pointy carrot fangs and radish-half eyeballs.
