15 minThis homemade coffee mix brings the warm, spiced flavors of a Viennese coffeehouse right to your pantry. Cinnamon, allspice, cloves, and nutmeg give each cup a gentle warmth that plain instant coffee just can’t touch.
The ratio here is well balanced. A scant ⅔ cup of instant coffee paired with equal sugar and ¾ cup powdered creamer means each cup comes out smooth and lightly sweetened without being cloying. Four teaspoons per mug of hot water is all it takes.
Mix up a big batch and store it in an airtight jar. It keeps for weeks and makes a thoughtful homemade gift during the holidays, especially packed into a mason jar with a ribbon and a tag with the mixing instructions.
Pro Tips
- Use a good quality instant coffee. The spices enhance the coffee flavor but can’t mask a cheap, bitter base.
- Measure the coffee as a scant ⅔ cup, slightly less than full. Too much and the mix tastes harsh.
- Pulse the finished mix in a food processor for 10 seconds to break up any clumps and distribute the spices evenly.
- For an iced version, dissolve 4 teaspoons in a splash of hot water first, then pour over ice and top with cold milk.
Variations
- Add 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder to the mix for a mocha-spiced version.
- Swap the sugar for an equal amount of powdered vanilla sugar for extra depth.
- Stir a spoonful into warm milk instead of water for a richer, latte-style drink.
