Unusual Banana Bread
Submitted by Bunster
Banana bread with a twist: chocolate chips, maraschino cherries, and plenty of nuts folded into a moist, mashed banana batter. Not your grandma’s loaf, but she’d approve.

1 hrsBanana bread gets a glow-up with chocolate chips, chopped maraschino cherries, and a generous helping of nuts stirred into the batter.
Three mashed bananas keep the crumb moist and tender while all those mix-ins turn every slice into a little treasure hunt.
It bakes up in a single loaf pan and fills the kitchen with the kind of smell that makes people wander in asking “what’s in the oven?"
Chef Tips
- Pat maraschino cherries dry with paper towels before chopping so they don’t add excess moisture to the batter
- Use overripe bananas with plenty of brown spots for the sweetest, most intense banana flavor
- Toss chocolate chips and nuts in a tablespoon of flour before folding in to keep them from sinking to the bottom
- Test for doneness with a toothpick at 40 minutes; ovens vary and you want a moist crumb, not a dry one
Ingredients
Directions
Cream together shorening and sugar.
Add eggs and mix well.
Sift dry ingredients and add to creamed mixture.
Stir in remaining ingredients.
Bake in greased loaf pan for 45 minutes at 350℉ (180℃).

I tried this recipe instead of the regular banana bread because I wanted something a little different, and it did not disappoint.
it is so moist and melts in your mouth. I did use a stick of butter for the shortening, so maybe that is why it is so delicious. For a bread that you want to be different, I would recommend this wholeheartedly.
