Turtle Cake # 2
Submitted by jess30
German chocolate cake layered with gooey melted caramels, chopped pecans, and chocolate chips between two layers of batter. A semi-homemade turtle cake that’s sinfully rich and ridiculously easy to make.

65 minTwo words will make everyone at the potluck lose their minds: turtle cake.
Start with a German chocolate cake mix. Pour half the batter in and bake it just until set. Then comes the good stuff: a river of melted caramels and evaporated milk, a shower of chopped pecans, and a blanket of chocolate chips. The rest of the batter goes on top and back in the oven it goes.
Cut into squares and watch that caramel layer stretch and pull with every bite. This is not health food. This is happiness food.
Pro Tips
- Melt the caramels slowly with the evaporated milk, stirring constantly so they don’t scorch
- Don’t overbake the first layer; 18 minutes keeps it soft enough for the caramel to sink in
- Let the cake cool completely before cutting so the caramel sets up
- Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream if you want to go full send
