80 minThis isn’t your standard pasta bake. It comes with a crown.
Layers of spiral pasta, sweetcorn, peas, flaked tuna, and diced tomatoes get bound together with cream of mushroom soup and scattered with grated cheddar.
But the showstopper sits on top: puff pastry rolled up with anchovy and tomato puree, sliced into pinwheels, and baked until they puff into golden, flaky spirals.
It’s hearty, it’s beautiful, and it feeds six hungry people from one dish.
Kitchen Tips
- Don’t dilute the mushroom soup. Using it straight from the tin gives the pasta a thick, creamy binding that holds everything together.
- Bake the pastry spirals on a separate sheet first, then arrange on top at the end so they stay crisp rather than sinking into the sauce.
- Use fresh pasta spirals if you can find them. They cook faster and have a silkier bite than dried.
Variations
- Skip the anchovies: Spread the pastry with pesto instead for a milder flavour.
- Go veggie: Replace the tuna with roasted courgette and red pepper for a meat-free version.
Ingredients
Directions
Cook the pasta for 5 minutes in boiling water or until just tender.
Drain and place in a large bowl.
Mix in the sweetcorn, frozen peas, undiluted soup and 1 Tablespoon of the chives.
Spoon half the pasta mixture into a large oven-proof dish.
Spread half the tuna and tomatoes over the top.
Cover with the remaining pasta mixture, tuna and tomatoes.
Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to a 10 inch square.
Mix together the anchovies and purée and spread over the pastry to within 1 inch.
Dampen the pastry edges, roll up like a swiss roll and cut into 16 rounds using a small sharp knife.
Place on a baking sheet amd press down to flatten slightly.
Preheat the oven to 350℉ (180℃).
Scatter the grated cheddar cheese over the pasta mix and bake for 30 minutes.
Increase the oven temperature to 400℉ (200℃) and place the spirals in the oven.
Bake with the pasta for 15 minutes until spirals are golden brown and pasta bake is hot and bubbling.
Arrange the spirals around the top of the pasta bake and scatter over the remaining chives.
Serve at once.
