Forget marinara. This shrimp pizza builds its flavor on a sauce you’d never expect: steak sauce blended with chutney, horseradish, and lime juice. That combination creates a tangy, sweet-hot base that pairs surprisingly well with seafood and melted cheese.

The sauce does all the work here. Steak sauce brings a vinegary depth, chutney adds fruity sweetness, horseradish gives it a sinus-clearing kick, and lime juice ties everything together with acid. Spread over a prebaked crust, it creates a sticky, flavorful foundation that’s nothing like a typical pizza.

Cooked shrimp go on top of the sauce, under the mozzarella so they’re shielded from direct heat. Since they’re already cooked, the short bake time just warms them through without turning them rubbery. Sweet Vidalia onion and green pepper strips on top add crunch and freshness against the rich, cheesy shrimp layer.

Kitchen Tips

  • Prebake the crust before adding toppings. A raw dough base won’t cook through in the 8-10 minute bake time and you’ll end up with a soggy bottom.
  • Halve the shrimp lengthwise so they lay flat. Whole shrimp curl up and create uneven bites with some slices getting all shrimp and others none.
  • Use a sweet onion like Vidalia. A regular yellow onion would be too sharp and would overpower the tangy sauce.
  • Let the pizza rest 2-3 minutes after baking before slicing. The cheese needs a moment to set or it slides right off.

Variations

  • Add crab meat or lobster chunks alongside the shrimp for a mixed seafood version.
  • Swap green bell pepper for roasted red peppers for a sweeter, smokier topping.
  • Drizzle with sriracha or a squeeze of fresh lime after baking for extra heat and brightness.
