Five ingredients, five minutes of prep, and your oven does the rest.

Canned sweet potatoes get layered in a casserole dish, spooned over with applesauce, and topped with brown sugar, dots of butter, and a dusting of nutmeg.

As it bakes, the applesauce and brown sugar melt together into a bubbling, caramelized glaze that coats every piece of sweet potato.

This is the side dish you make when you need something on the table fast but still want it to taste like you tried.

Chef Tips

  • Drain the canned sweet potatoes well so excess liquid doesn’t water down the applesauce glaze.
  • Pack the brown sugar firmly when measuring. Loosely scooped brown sugar won’t give you enough sweetness to balance the tang of the applesauce.
  • Use chunky applesauce if you can find it. The apple pieces add texture and make the casserole feel more homemade.
