2 minThe sunset mocktail is built on a single visual trick: grenadine is denser than fruit juice, so it stays put at the bottom of the glass and bleeds upward into the orange and pineapple as the ice melts. The result looks like a tequila sunrise without a drop of alcohol, which makes it a go-to for designated drivers, kids’ parties, and Dry January.
A stemmed glass matters more than you’d guess. The narrow bowl shape exaggerates the gradient and keeps the layers crisp longer than a tumbler does. Ice cubes are equally important. They cushion the juice as you pour, slowing the flow so the colors don’t blur on the way down.
Pour the orange and pineapple juices over the back of a spoon if you want razor-sharp layers. The final dash of grenadine on top sinks slowly through, leaving streaks of red behind it like sunlight through clouds. Garnish with a thin lemon wheel on the rim for a citrus snap.
Kitchen Tips
- Use chilled juice straight from the fridge. Room-temperature juice mixes the layers faster.
- Real grenadine made from pomegranate (not the bright corn-syrup kind) gives a deeper, less neon color and a tart edge.
- Skip the spoon and pour fast for a hazier sunset look. Pour slow over a spoon for sharp bands.
- Squeeze the lemon wheel just before serving to cut the sweetness.
Variations
- Swap pineapple for mango juice for a tropical twist with thicker body.
- Float a splash of sparkling water on top for fizz and extra shimmer.
- Add a few frozen raspberries instead of ice for slow-color drama as they thaw.
