Think of this less as a recipe and more as a blueprint for the ultimate summer salad.

The ingredient list reads like a farmers market haul: crisp radishes, creamy avocado, marinated artichoke hearts, fresh mushrooms, crunchy sprouts, shrimp, and a handful of grated cheese. Use what you have, skip what you don’t, and toss it all together.

Here’s the wild card: try leaving out the lettuce entirely. Sounds strange, but a hearty mix of marinated veggies and protein holds up on its own and actually tastes more interesting.

Chef Tips

  • Marinate your mushrooms, asparagus, and Brussels sprouts in the same vinaigrette for a cohesive flavor.

Directions

Over the years I have gotten to where I will put just about anything in a tossed summer salad.

To add some variety to your summertime salads try any or all of these ingredients.

Try leaving out the lettuce sometime, it makes for an interesting salad.

To prepare, have all ingredients ready to go.

Toss together and serve.
