These are the kind of cookies your grandmother pulled from a handwritten recipe card. Rolled oats, chopped dates, and crunchy nuts held together with warm cinnamon and allspice in a chewy, golden drop cookie.

They spread as they bake, so give them room on the sheet. The edges go crisp while the centers stay soft and studded with sticky bits of date.

This is a cookie jar recipe through and through. Make a big batch, because they disappear fast.

  • Chop the dates small so they distribute evenly through the dough. Sticky fingers? Dust your knife with a little flour.
  • These spread, so space them a full 2 inches apart on the baking sheet.

Directions

Cream shortening, salt, soda, spices, sugar, and cream well.

Add balance.

Mix well. Drop from tip of teaspoon 2 inches apart (they spread) on well greased cookie sheet.

Flatten slightly. Bake 350℉ (180℃) for 12 to 15 minutes.
