This is shepherd’s pie stripped down to its absolute essentials. Four ingredients, one baking dish, and about an hour of your time. It’s the kind of no-nonsense dinner that families have been making for generations when the budget is tight and the kids are hungry.
Browned ground beef gets mixed with tomato soup for a saucy, savory base. Canned green beans go on top. Mashed potatoes get spread over everything and dusted with paprika before the whole thing hits the oven.
Thirty minutes of baking and those mashed potatoes turn golden and slightly crusty on top. Scoop it out in big, messy portions and watch it disappear.
Kitchen Tips
- Spread the mashed potatoes all the way to the edges of the dish to seal in the filling
- Use a fork to create ridges on top of the potatoes; the peaks get extra crispy in the oven
- Let it rest for 5 minutes after baking so the layers hold together when you serve
- Leftover mashed potatoes work great here; this is a perfect fridge-cleanout meal
