- Ingredient Temperature: Cold refried beans or Cheez Whiz can slow yeast activity. Warm them slightly (not hot) before adding.
- Yeast Activation: Ensure water is 110-115°F (43-46°C) to activate yeast without killing it. Breadmaker Variability: Cycles vary by machine. A 3-3.5-hour cycle is typical for white bread, but consult your manual.
- Avoiding Pitfalls: Chunky refried beans can disrupt dough consistency. Use smooth beans or blend them first.
- Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days. Freeze slices for up to 1 month.
Optional Variations
- Spicy Kick: Add ¼ tsp cayenne pepper or 1 tbsp diced jalapeños for heat.
- Cheese Swap: Use ⅓ cup of Cheese whiz or your favorite cheddar.
- Herb Boost: Mix in 1 teaspoon dried oregano or cumin for extra depth.
- Gluten-Free Option: Substitute bread flour and whole-wheat flour with a 1:1 gluten-free bread flour blend, but expect a denser texture.
Ingredients
Directions
- Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for consistent results.
- Add ingredients to the breadmaker pan in this order: warm water, refried beans, Cheez Whiz, sugar, ginger, salt, garlic salt, chili powder, bread flour, whole-wheat flour, vital wheat gluten, and yeast.
- Place the pan in the breadmaker, select the “White Bread” or “Basic” cycle (medium crust setting, if available), and press “Start."
- Check the dough after 5-10 minutes of kneading. If it’s too sticky, add 1 tbsp flour; if too dry, add 1 tsp water. The dough should form a smooth, slightly tacky ball.
- Allow the breadmaker to complete the cycle (kneading, rising, and baking).
- Once done, remove the loaf from the pan and cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
