5 minA punch bowl beverage that doubles as dessert. Sweetened coffee stirred into cold milk with vanilla extract, chilled, then poured over scoops of ice cream in the bowl. Whipped cream and a dusting of nutmeg finish each cup.
The instant coffee dissolves directly into the cold milk with the sugar, so there’s no need to brew anything. A third of a cup of instant granules sounds strong, but it has to stand up to the five cups of milk and a pint of ice cream that dilute it. The result is a rich, coffee-forward punch that’s creamy but not heavy.
Ladling the ice cream in large spoonfuls creates floating islands that slowly melt into the punch as guests serve themselves. Each cup gets a different ratio of creamy melt to strong coffee depending on how much ice cream ends up in their ladle. That’s part of the charm.
The dash of salt sharpens the coffee flavor and keeps the sweetness from going flat. It’s a bartender’s trick that works just as well in a punch bowl.
Chef Tips
- Chill the coffee-milk base for at least 2 hours before adding the ice cream. A cold base prevents the ice cream from melting instantly.
- Use coffee-flavored ice cream for a more intense coffee punch, or vanilla for a lighter, more crowd-friendly version.
- Grate whole nutmeg fresh over each cup. Pre-ground nutmeg loses its aromatic punch within weeks.
Variations
- Add 2 tablespoons of bourbon or Kahlua to the base for an adults-only version.
- Use chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla for a mocha-style punch.
- Swap milk for oat milk and dairy-free ice cream for a vegan adaptation.
