15 minStop buying those little onion soup mix packets. This homemade version uses four pantry ingredients and takes about two minutes to throw together. Dried onion flakes, beef bouillon granules, onion powder, and seasoned salt combine into a mix that works anywhere a recipe calls for dry onion soup mix.
The double hit of onion (flakes plus powder) gives you both texture and concentrated flavor. The bouillon adds the savory, beefy backbone that makes commercial packets so addictive, without the long list of additives and preservatives.
Store it in a small jar or wrap it in foil and it keeps for up to 6 months in a cool, dry spot. Make a few batches at once and you’ll always have some on hand.
Pro Tips
- Use this as a 1:1 substitute for one packet of commercial onion soup mix in any recipe: pot roasts, dips, meatloaf, casseroles.
- Store in small glass jars with tight lids. Baby food jars or small mason jars work well and keep moisture out.
- Adjust the seasoned salt to your taste. Different brands vary in saltiness, so start with ¼ teaspoon and add more if needed.
Variations
- Add ½ teaspoon of garlic powder for an onion-garlic version.
- Use mushroom bouillon instead of beef to make it vegetarian-friendly.
- Mix in a pinch of dried thyme or parsley flakes for a more herbed seasoning blend.
