Halloween spider cake filled with green Jello that oozes when sliced, frosted black with licorice legs and gumdrop eyes. Gross, fun, and unforgettable.

This Halloween cake is the stuff of kid nightmares in the best possible way. A cake mix baked in two metal bowls creates a dome-shaped spider body. The bigger dome gets hollowed out, stuffed with whipped green Jello, and sealed back together. Black frosting covers the whole thing, licorice sticks become creepy legs, and green gumdrops make a cluster of beady spider eyes.

The real magic happens at the table. When you slice into the spider, bright green goop oozes out, mimicking exactly what would happen if you squished a real spider. Kids will scream. Adults will laugh. Everyone will want a piece.

This is less about baking skill and more about commitment to the gross-out factor. Any box cake mix works, and the assembly is more craft project than pastry technique.

Kitchen Tips

  • Use metal bowls, not glass, for baking. Metal conducts heat more evenly and the cakes release more easily
  • Let the Jello set to a thick, wobbly consistency before spooning it into the cavity. Too liquid and it leaks out the seams
  • Chill the assembled cake before frosting. Cold cake is easier to frost without crumbs pulling into the black icing
  • Use two big gumdrops for the main eyes and six small ones clustered around them for an authentically creepy spider face

Variations

  • Use red Jello and red frosting for a “black widow” spider version
  • Fill with green pudding instead of Jello for a thicker, slimier ooze
  • Add pipe cleaner segments bent into the licorice legs for a more jointed, realistic spider look

Directions

Take your average cake mix.

Bake it up in 2 metal bowls--1 bigger than the other.

Once unmolded, cut the bigger one (the body) in half, horizontally.

Carefully scoop out an adequate cavity in each half.

FILL with well-whipped set green Jello, and reattach the halves.

Frost black, arrange on serving platter.

Use licorice stix as legs.

Use 2 BIG green gumdrops and 6 little ones as eyes.

When the cake is cut into, it spurts green goop, just like a real spider when stepped on.
