Homemade cat food with canned sardines, cooked rice, minced liver, and parsley. A simple 4-ingredient recipe your cat will love, ready in 5 minutes with no cooking required.

5 minYour cat is going to lose its mind over this. Canned sardines mashed with cooked rice, minced liver, and chopped parsley. It smells like a fishing dock (in the best way, at least to a cat) and comes together in about five minutes.
The sardines provide protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which are great for a cat’s coat and joints. Use the oil-packed kind and include the oil. Cats need that fat in their diet. Break the sardines into bite-sized pieces with a wooden spoon rather than mashing them into paste. Most cats prefer some texture.
Minced beef or chicken liver adds iron and vitamin A. Just a tablespoon. Parsley isn’t just filler here. It freshens breath (yes, cat breath) and adds trace vitamins.
Store any unused portion tightly covered in the fridge.
Pro Tips
- This is a treat or supplement, not a complete daily diet. Cats need taurine and other nutrients that may not be fully covered here. Consult your vet for long-term feeding plans
- Serve at room temperature. Most cats reject cold food straight from the fridge
- Use plain cooked rice with no butter, salt, or seasonings
- Mince the liver raw. The sardine oil and mixing process effectively “cures” the tiny amount used
Variations
- Swap sardines for canned mackerel or tuna packed in water
- Replace rice with cooked oatmeal for a different grain base
- Add a small spoonful of pureed pumpkin for digestive support
