This is the cake that makes people scream before they taste it. A Halloween classic, the kitty litter cake is designed to look absolutely revolting while tasting like a layered cake-pudding trifle with cookie crumbles and chocolate candy.

Two cakes (spice and white) get baked, cooled, and crumbled together with vanilla pudding and crushed white sandwich cookies. The mixture goes into a new, clean kitty litter box, and here’s where the magic happens: Tootsie Rolls get microwaved until pliable, shaped with curved ends, and buried in or draped over the “litter." Green-tinted cookie crumbs scattered on top mimic the chlorophyll pellets in real cat litter.

The whole thing gets served with a brand-new pooper scooper. Presentation is everything with this cake.

Every component is actually quite tasty on its own. The spice cake adds warmth, the pudding keeps things moist, and the cookie crumbs give it that sandy texture that makes the illusion work.

Pro Tips

  • Use a brand-new, never-used litter box and scooper. This seems obvious, but label them clearly so nobody accidentally repurposes them later.
  • Microwave the Tootsie Rolls in batches of three. Overheating makes them too soft to shape, so heat just until pliable.
  • Shape the Tootsie Rolls with slightly curved, tapered ends for maximum realism. Some should be buried, some should sit on top partially visible.
  • Go light with the green food coloring. A few drops mixed into a small amount of crumbs is all you need. Too much green looks fake.

Variations

  • Use chocolate pudding instead of vanilla for a darker, even more convincing “litter” base.
  • Add a layer of crushed graham crackers for a different colored litter effect.
  • Make individual servings in small disposable containers for easier party distribution.

Directions

Prepare cake mixes and bake according to directions.

Prepare pudding mix and chill until ready to assemble.

Crumble white sandwich cookies in small batches in blender, they tend to stick, so scrape often.

Set aside all but about ¼ cup.

To the ¼ cup cookie crumbs, add a few drops green food coloring and mix using a fork.

When cakes are cooled to room temperature, crumble into a large bowl.

Toss with half the remaining cookie crumbs and the chilled pudding.

Gently combine.

Line new, clean kitty litter box.

Put mixture into litter box.

Put three unwrapped Toostie rolls in a microwave safe dish and heat until soft and pliable.

Shape ends so they are no longer blunt, curving slightly.

Repeat with 3 more Tootsie rolls and bury in mixutre.

Sprinkle the other half of cookie crumbs over top.

Scatter the green cookie crumbs lightly over the top, this is supposed to look like the chlorophyll in kitty litter.

Heat remaining Tootsie Rolls, 3 at a time in the microwave until almost melted.

Scrape them on top of the cake and sprinkle with cookie crumbs.

Serve with a new pooper scooper.
