Directions

Mix together the salt, thyme, ⅓ cup flour, paprika and garlic powder in a largish bowl.

Add sliced onion, cover with a plate and toss to coat.

Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat.

Add the onion along with any remaining flour mixture and cook, turning once or twice, until golden and crispy, about 5 to 15 minutes depending on how crispy you like your french fried onions.

Use atop your favorite casserole or anywhere you might use french fried onions. They're pretty tasty on their own too.

Used this recipe for the onions on top of a green bean casserole in a cast iron skillet. Had to add a little more oil to cook them but they were a great topping. They are worth it. And so easy.

What are you supposed to do with the thyme and the 1/4 teaspoon salt?

These are the best. I am never buying the can of french-fried onion rings again. This recipe is better. Used them on green bean casserole and we went back for third and fourth servings. Yum.

Great to hear you love this recipe. Absolutely agree! These homemade rings are way less grease and taste a lot better than store-bought, and not hard to make either. We also use this recipe all the time to make the toppings for great bean casserole :)
