3 daysThese handmade herb soap balls are a satisfying DIY project that turns basic grated soap into fragrant, gift-worthy bath products. Choose your herbs based on what you’re after: chamomile for calming, lavender for relaxation, peppermint for an energizing wash, or rosemary for an herbal, woodsy scent.
The process is straightforward. Pulverized dried herbs steep in boiling water with 5-6 drops of essential oil for 15 minutes, creating a concentrated herbal infusion. That fragrant liquid pours over grated soap and gets mixed by hand until the soap softens and becomes moldable.
Two rounds of mixing with a 15-minute rest between them lets the soap absorb the herbal water fully. The mixture should be pliable enough to shape into balls, but firm enough to hold its form. Divide into 3 large or 6 small balls and let them dry on plastic wrap for three full days.
The drying time is what sets the soap and makes the balls firm enough to use without crumbling.
Pro Tips
- Use a mild, unscented bar soap as your base. Strongly scented soap will clash with the herbal infusion
- Grate the soap finely for faster absorption. Large chunks don’t break down evenly
- Match the essential oil to the dried herb for the strongest scent: lavender oil with lavender, rosemary oil with rosemary
- Flip the balls once a day during drying so they dry evenly on all sides
Variations
- Oatmeal scrub: Mix a tablespoon of finely ground oats into the soap for gentle exfoliation
- Citrus herb: Add dried lemon or orange zest to the herb blend for a bright, citrusy fragrance
- Holiday gifts: Shape into molds instead of balls and wrap in tissue paper for a homemade gift
