20 minThe grilled pineapple slice is what makes this veggie burger worth cooking. Hawaiian-style toppings (sweet-tart charred pineapple, sharp red onion, melty Swiss cheese) flip a frozen patty from weeknight shortcut into something that tastes deliberately built.
Brushing the patties with vegetable broth during grilling is the move most home cooks skip. Frozen veggie burgers tend to dry out on a hot grill. The broth baste adds moisture and a savory backbone, essentially basting them the way you’d baste chicken.
Timing is the whole game. Patties go on first for 8 minutes, pineapple and onion join for the last 3, and the buns catch the final minute. Everything comes off the grill ready and warm at once, which means you assemble the burger while it’s all still hot.
Kitchen Tips
- Grill the pineapple until you see clear char marks. Caramelized edges taste a hundred times better than wet, pale slices, and the heat intensifies the natural sweetness.
- Use pineapple packed in its own juice, not heavy syrup. Syrup makes the slices too sweet and caramelizes too fast into burnt sugar.
- Toast the buns cut-side down only. Toasting both sides dries out the bread; one side gives you a grilled crust against the burger with a soft top.
Variations
- Swap Swiss for provolone or pepper jack for different cheese flavors.
- Add a slice of grilled portobello under the patty for extra meaty heft.
- Drizzle with teriyaki sauce or hoisin instead of salad dressing for a full Hawaiian-Asian fusion burger.
