This German chocolate delight is a thick milkshake that captures all the flavors of a German chocolate cake in a glass. Chocolate ice cream, chocolate syrup, and cream of coconut get blended together with milk, then poured into a stein and topped with whipped cream and chopped pecans.

The cream of coconut is the ingredient that makes this taste like the classic cake frosting rather than just another chocolate shake. It brings that sweet, tropical richness that pairs with the pecans the same way the coconut-pecan frosting does on the real cake.

Blend for about 30 seconds, just until smooth. Over-blending melts the ice cream too much and you lose that thick, frosty texture.

Kitchen Tips

  • Shake or stir the cream of coconut well before measuring. It separates in the can and the thick paste settles at the bottom.
  • Use a good quality chocolate ice cream, not chocolate-flavored frozen dessert. The better the ice cream, the richer the shake.
  • Serve immediately after blending. This melts fast, especially with the room-temperature milk thinning the ice cream.
  • Chill your glass or stein in the freezer for 10 minutes beforehand to keep the shake thick longer.

Variations

  • Add a shot of Kahlua or Baileys for an adult version.
  • Use toasted coconut flakes as a garnish alongside the pecans for extra coconut crunch.
  • Swap chocolate ice cream for vanilla and double the chocolate syrup for a lighter chocolate base.
