10 minFrescavena is the oat-based cold drink Venezuelans grew up on, originally a lunchtime staple and still a popular way to cool off on hot afternoons. The technique uses infant oat cereal (Gerber is the traditional choice) instead of rolled oats because its pre-milled grain dissolves instantly into milk or water without leaving any gritty texture.
The base is blissfully simple: blend infant oat cereal and sugar together into a uniform powder, scoop two tablespoons of the mix into eight ounces of cold milk or water, shake with ice, and drink. The oat base gives it a creamy, slightly nutty flavor without any of the chew or texture of oatmeal.
This base is endlessly adaptable: add a splash of vanilla, a dash of cinnamon, or a spoon of strawberry powder to change the profile. Served warm, it becomes a comforting winter drink; served cold over ice, it is the Venezuelan answer to chocolate milk.
Prep Tips
- Blend the cereal for a full 3 to 5 minutes until you cannot see any flakes. Undertreated cereal settles at the bottom of the glass and feels sandy.
- Store the dry mix in an airtight jar and it keeps for months. Treat it like instant cocoa powder: ready to scoop into any liquid you want.
- Shake the drink with ice instead of just stirring. Cold temperature and agitation disperse the cereal so it does not clump.
- If using rolled oats instead of infant cereal, toast them lightly first and blend for longer. Raw oats taste raw.
Variations
- Stir in a spoon of cocoa powder and a drop of vanilla extract for a chocolate-oat version.
- Blend with frozen banana for a thicker breakfast smoothie.
- Use almond milk or oat milk in place of dairy for a plant-based version.
Ingredients
Directions
Empty 8 oz box of infant cereal into food processor.
Using this cereal instead of rolled oats produces a finer grain that more easily dissolves in liquid, plus it is fortified with more vitamins and minerals.
Blend until the flakes are no longer visible and it becomes a fine powder (3-5 minutes).
Add sugar and blend again until it is mixed thoroughly and all the same fine powder consistency.
Add 2 tablespoons (add more or less to taste) of mixture to 8 ounces of milk or water and blend in a blender or shaker cup with 2 ice cubes and enjoy!
Optional additions:
add vanilla, cinnamon or strawberry quick to final beverage.
Can be served as a warm beverage as well.
