This is the dessert that turns Halloween parties into an event. Crushed Oreo cookies stand in for soil, a creamy mix of pudding, cream cheese, and whipped topping plays the buried treasure, and gummy worms wiggle across the top. Built and served in a clean flowerpot with a flower poked into the center, this dessert is more theater than recipe, and kids lose their minds when it hits the table.

The ratio of crumbs to cream is what makes or breaks the illusion. Use almost the full 20 ounces of Oreos. The top layer should be dense and almost dry-looking to mimic real garden soil. The pudding layer underneath holds the structure together and provides the sweet payoff. Freezing the pot before serving firms everything up so the layers don’t slide when you scoop.

Kitchen Tips

  • Use a brand-new flowerpot scrubbed clean, and line it completely with plastic wrap so nothing touches the unglazed ceramic. Terracotta is porous and can carry residue.
  • An 8-inch pot is the easy answer if you invert a saucer in the bottom as a riser. A 6-inch pot is too tight for the volume of cake.
  • Crush the cookies in a sealed bag with a rolling pin if you want chunkier dirt, or a food processor for fine soil-like crumbs.
  • Freeze for at least 3 hours before serving. Anything less and the pudding layer slumps when scooped.

Variations

  • Use chocolate pudding instead of vanilla for a darker, more cocoa-leaning dirt cake.
  • Add a layer of crumbled brownies between the cookie and pudding for an extra texture.
  • Top with edible flowers and a fresh sprig of mint instead of gummy worms for a more grown-up presentation.

Directions

Crush the cookies in a large plastic bag using a rolling pin; or use a food processor to crush the cookies.

Set aside.

Cream together butter, cream cheese and confectioners’ sugar.

In another bowl, cream together the milk, instant pudding mix and thawed whipped topping.

Combine the two mixtures; mix well.

Line a clean flowerpot (see note) with plastic wrap or aluminum foil.

Fill pot with alternating layers of cookie crumbs and pudding mixture, beginning and ending with cookie crumbs.

Cover top of pot with foil or plastic wrap.

Freeze.

Before serving, insert a flower in the middle.

Place a few gummy worms on top for decoration.

Note: An 8-inch flowerpot is too big, but a 6-inch pot is too small.

A suggestion is to turn a saucer upside down in the bottom of an 8-inch pot before lining the pot with plastic wrap.
