1 hrsThink of these as loaded burger patties that never needed a bun. Ground beef gets mixed with deviled ham and Worcestershire for a savory, slightly smoky base, then each patty gets crowned with fluffy mashed potatoes enriched with cottage cheese.
The crispy fried onions on top are the finishing touch that pulls the whole thing together. They get toasty and golden in the oven while the potatoes stay creamy underneath.
Kids go absolutely wild for these, and they come together with mostly pantry staples in about an hour. Serve them straight from the oven with a simple veggie side.
Kitchen Tips
- Use less water than the potato puff package calls for so the mashed potatoes hold their shape on top of the patties
- Don’t pack the meat mixture too tightly; a looser patty stays juicier
- Save half the fried onions for the top so they stay crunchy instead of getting soggy in the potato layer
Ingredients
Directions
Heat the oven to 350℉ (180℃).
Mix meat, deviled ham and worcestershire sauce.
Shape the mixture into 4 patties. Place the patties inan ungreased baking pan 8×8×2 inches.
Prepare the potato puffs as directed on the package except -- decrease the water to 1 cup.
Stir in the cottage cheese and half the onions into the potatoes.
Top each patty with ¼ of the potato mixture.
Sprinkle with the remaining onions.
Bake uncovered to desired doneness, 30 to 40 minutes.
Remove the patties to a serving plate with a slotted spoon and serve.
