This is a classic American trifle built on shortcuts. A boxed brownie mix bakes, gets stabbed all over with a fork, then drinks up half a cup of coffee liqueur until each square is boozy and tender. That single step is the difference between a flat layered dessert and one that tastes like a grown-up tiramisu.

Layering matters. Crumbled brownies on the bottom, chocolate pudding next, then crushed toffee bars, then whipped topping. Repeat. Use a clear trifle bowl so the stripes show through the glass, because half the appeal of this dessert is the cross-section reveal when you scoop it.

Smash the toffee bars in a zip-top bag with a kitchen hammer or rolling pin if you don’t want to dirty a food processor. Aim for a mix of fine crumbs and pea-sized chunks so the layer has both crunch and pretty texture against the dark pudding.

Pro Tips

  • Chill the assembled trifle for at least 2 hours before serving. The brownies soften, the layers settle, and the flavors marry.
  • Use cold milk straight from the fridge when mixing the pudding so it sets thick and holds the layer cleanly.
  • For a kid-friendly version, swap the coffee liqueur for strong brewed coffee mixed with a teaspoon of vanilla.

Variations

  • Sub crushed chocolate chip cookies or chocolate wafers for the brownies if you want less work.
  • Use white chocolate pudding for a tuxedo-style contrast against the dark brownies.
  • Stir a tablespoon of espresso powder into the pudding mix for an even deeper mocha note.

Directions

Preheat oven according to brownie package directions.

Bake according to directions, and let cool.

When cool, prick holes in the tops of the brownies with a fork and pour the coffee liqueur into them.

Let stand.

Prepare the chocolate pudding according to directions. If you wish you can use the low calorie pudding mix (it tastes the same).

Break the candy bars up into very small pieces with a food processor or a kitchen hammer.

Break up half the brownies and place in the bottom of a large trifle dish or glass bowl.

Cover with half the pudding, half the candy and then half the whipped topping.

Repeat layers with remaining ingredients.

Note: To cut the calories, you can use low calorie whipped top- ping, low calorie brownie mix, low calorie pudding and omit candy.
