These fried won tons flip the script from savory to sweet, stuffing crispy wrappers with a simple filling of finely chopped dates and walnuts. The dates turn jammy and caramelized inside the hot shell while the walnuts keep a bit of crunch.

Only three ingredients and a pot of oil. Spoon the date-walnut mixture onto a corner of each wrapper, fold them up tight, and fry until the outside is golden and blistered. The thin won ton skin goes from soft to shatteringly crisp in seconds, making these dangerously easy to eat one after another.

Serve them as a dessert appetizer or a sweet snack. They’re a crowd favorite at parties because they look impressive but take almost no effort to make.

Chef Tips

  • Chop the dates and walnuts very fine so the filling holds together when you wrap. Large chunks tear through the thin wrappers.
  • Seal the edges with a dab of water pressed firmly. Any gaps let oil seep in during frying, making the filling greasy.
  • Fry just a few at a time. Overcrowding drops the oil temperature and gives you pale, oily won tons instead of crisp, golden ones.

Variations

  • Dust the hot fried won tons with powdered sugar or drizzle with honey for extra sweetness.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon to the date-walnut filling for warm spice.
  • Swap walnuts for pecans or almonds for a different nut flavor and texture.
