45 minThese butterscotch brownies get their rich, caramel-like flavor from packed brown sugar melted with shortening on the stovetop.
Chopped dates bring a sticky sweetness that plays off the crunch of walnuts in every bite.
The batter comes together in a single saucepan, so cleanup is practically nothing.
Cut them into squares while still warm and try not to eat half the pan before they cool.
Chef Tips
- Pack the brown sugar firmly for maximum butterscotch flavor
- Chop dates into small, even pieces so they distribute evenly through the batter
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature; the dates keep these bars moist for days
