| 1 | cup | cocoa powder | |

| 2 | cups | brown sugar | |
| 1 | cup | molasses | |
| 1 | cup | vegetable shortening | |
| 2 | each | egg yolks | |
| 1 | teaspoon | baking soda | heaping |
| 1 | x | flour, all-purpose | to make soft dough |
| 1 | teaspoon | cinnamon | |
| 1 | teaspoon | cloves | |
| 1 | teaspoon | allspice |
Add hot water to cocoa and soda. Let stand while preparing other ingredients. Cream shortening, adding sugar gradually. Add beaten egg yolks, molasses and cocoa mixture. Sift spices with flour and add. Roll soft as possible. Cut with cooky cutter. Bake in hot oven. Egg whites may be used to make icing for cookies.
Note: Hot oven is 350 - 400 F.
