60 minWhat happens when apple crisp meets a chocolate oat bar? This. And it’s fantastic.
A buttery oat-and-brown-sugar crumble gets pressed into a pan as the base. Then the rest of the crumble gets tossed with chopped apples, mini chocolate morsels, and pecans and scattered on top.
Baked until golden and lightly crunchy, these bars have the warm, fruity satisfaction of apple crisp with a chocolate twist that takes them from snack to dessert. Cut into squares and try to stop at one.
Chef Tips
- Cut the butter into the flour mixture until it truly resembles fine crumbs; big chunks of butter mean a crumbly base that won’t hold together
- Leave the apple skins on for extra texture and color, or peel them if you prefer a softer bite
- Let the bars cool slightly before cutting; too hot and they fall apart, too cold and they’re hard to slice cleanly
Ingredients
Directions
Preheat oven to 375℉ (190℃).
In large bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, baking soda and salt.
With pastry blender or 2 knives, cut in butter until mixture resembles fine crumbs.
Stir in oats; press half of oat mixture into greased 13×9 inch baking pan.
To remaining oat mixture, add semi-sweet chocolate mini morsels, apples and pecans; stir to combine.
Sprinkle over base.
Bake 35 to 40 minutes until lightly browned.
Cool slightly; cut into squares.
Makes about 15 servings.
