Think of this as a chocolate lover’s poke cake dressed up as a brownie, and it is every bit as indulgent as it sounds.

A chocolate cake mix gets baked, then poked full of holes while still hot. Warm condensed milk and chocolate syrup flood into every crevice, turning the crumb dense and impossibly fudgy.

Crushed walnuts go on top for crunch, then the whole thing chills until dessert time when a generous layer of chocolate whipped topping seals the deal.

Kitchen Tips

  • Poke the holes while the cake is still hot so the chocolate milk mixture flows deep into the crumb.
  • Chill for at least two hours before serving. The longer it sits, the more the syrup soaks in and the fudgier it gets.
  • Use the handle end of a wooden spoon for the holes. You want them wide enough for the liquid to actually flow through, not just sit on top.
